areva plumps for schneider offshore

Turbine maker Areva has named compatriot Schneider Electric as its preferred supplier of power equipment for offshore wind farms it is involving in developing off France, including the giant 500MW Saint Brieuc, Le Tréport and Yeu-Noirmoutier projects.

Under the terms of the deal signed by the two French companies, which last month tied-up to advance hydrogen fuel cell energy storage systems, Schneider will provide transformers and circuit breakers, to be manufactured at its facilities near Metz and Grenoble.

"This agreement with Schneider further underscores our commitment to developing a complete industrial sector in France, providing job creation opportunities and harnessing our local expertise," states Areva Renewables chief executive Louis-François Durret.

France’s Areva and Schneider Electric have signed a strategic partnership deal to develop energy storage systems based on hydrogen fuel cell technology.

Under the terms of this tie-up, which is targeting concepts that will boost the reliability of electrical grids in remote locations, Areva will provide its Greenergy Box technology, with Schneider working as grid integrator.

“This agreement will create a robust commercial partnership for deploying an innovative solution in energy storage,” states Schneider Electric’s executive vice president Frédéric Abbal.

The Greenergy Box, made up of an electrolyser and fuel cell, is designed to store hydrogen and oxygen from water electrolysis during periods low energy demand and flow electricity onto the grid during stretches of peak consumption.
