    WangChung, please no offence. It is something from the sixties. An interesting relic but about as relevant as "Star Wars".

    Some [actually a lot] of complexity can be overcome with better technology, but 3D radar is still "out there". Actually it has been superseded. The concept of the Quad Radar mentioned earlier is totally obsolete too. The pilot had to be told where he was on the glide-slope. Today they have direct ILS data on display. Much better.

    It is possible carriers use something similar because of the precision those crazy Navy pilots need. But that is specialised.
