One of my pet hates is the pronunciation of the "harass", or harassment by newsreaders. The majority now pronounce the word harras, or harrasment. When I went to school a double letter always meant the emphasis was on the double letters. Has that all changed now?
Apparently the new pronunciation is another "americanism", to change the emphasis to the r from the s's. They should change the spelling then to "harras" if they want to pronounce it that way to save us all confusion...
