Malaysia has a Westminster system of democracy it's not a dictatorship, although there is a gerrymander that favours the UMNO ruling party. The opposition is the muslim fundamentalist party and the Chinese party and the fundamentalists have taken a couple of the eastern states. Mahathir exercises a high degree of control over the popular media though so it's not by any means a free society, yet there are basic freedoms at least as good as Singapore.
