The willingness for politicians to push coal gas is proportional to the prize at the end and tempered by the green and farmer votes they may lose in the process.
Even if the UK gets coal gas up and running it is not a silver bullet. Coal gas is just part of the mix and the UK will always be reliant on Russia and Middle East and elsewhere for energy. Russia has vast production of conventional gas as well as vast reserves of coal gas that dwarf the UK reserves. UK coal gas is not guaranteed to provide even the domestic supply let alone exporting it so the prize is not that big for politicians.
On the other hand we have kamikaze greenies, tree changers and farmers who don't understand or believe that methane can be extracted safely and nothing will change their mind. They are in a fight to the death.
The biggest prize is for the would be coal gas companies and they need to win the public argument.
