    Yes, it only deals with a system that already exists. This is a well known limitation of the theory of evolution - the theory only addresses changes once life had started and does not address the origins of life.

    There is more to the theory than just energy (and food and water). The diagram also deals with the impact of the environment (point 1) and the part played by information (point 5) (natural selection in the case of the theory of evolution).
