The source you are using quotes reported earnings. Market participants look at Underlying earnings. RIO had $3.4b in asset impairments and $2.7b loss on debt and exchange derivatives which would not affect cash earnings.
I get a PE of 11.4
I don't own any RIO- I prefer BHP.
