So the 'belief' or faith (or desire) that 'God isn't a good explanation precedes the acceptance of evolution.
There are many ways in which ex-theists become atheists. This is Dawkins' path - individuals have their own stories.
The common factor is that atheists don't think there is sufficient evidence to support the notion that God exists, and all who I have asked have told me that they would change their mind should sufficient evidence be found.
I have yet to hear a theist state that he/she would admit that he/she would change his/her mind if sufficient evidence were found that God does not exist - even though this is unlikely to happen because proving a negative is mostly far more difficult that proving a positive.
A person does not have to go along with the theory of evolution to be an atheist. For example a person who doesn't believe there is sufficient evidence to support evolution may also believe that there is insufficient evidence to support the existence of God. I have also heard some theists say that they can go along with the theory of evolution because they view evolution as the playing out of the laws of nature which they believe to be God made.
