They have done some wonderful testing of monkeys and found they exhibit surprising amounts of altruism when others of their group are treated unfairly. Most humans regardless of belief are good hearted and charitable.
I don't know if religion per se is the source of goodness. One would hope they can gather a collective goodness to have a greater impact. Many non-religious or non-aligned individuals have made extraordinary contributions to the welfare of peoples. After a disaster religiosity has no bearing on who arises to assist or who risks their lives for others. Many studies have shown this.
Even Neanderthal remains have been found that indicate the individual could not possibly fend for themselves, so it seems charity is a natural state of collective survival. Part of our makeup long before religious conscription.
