Exactly, stockers. That's why a simple air-drilled vertical for Mt Kitty was appropriate, even though it's obsolete technology as far as production wells go.
Find the resource first - then worry about how best to develop it.
The rig incident here wasn't due to CTP or STO incompetence. STO drill hundreds of wells per year and these incidents are very rare. Just bad luck (or alternatively, the Curse of the Amadeus Basin!).
