sad dino - that you are not prepared to give cycling a go - but then again, maybe because of location, then cycling may be a hazard.

watso is blessed insofar as that he lives in a suburb, which has easy access to several shopping centres via cycle/walk ways - and living in a riverside suburb, then there are cycle ways all along the swan/canning rivers - which link into cycle ways alongside the railways and freeways.

not being a lycra cyclist (and nothing wrong with being a lycra cyclist) - watso lives in perfect harmony with pedestrians and other cyclists.

mmmm - the one accident that watso had on a cycle/walk way was with another female driver/cyclist.. there was a bend in the cycle/walk way - with vegetation hiding the approaches. watso was probably casually riding in the middle of the cycle/walk way - the same as the approaching female driver/cyclist. upon noticing the female coming around the corner, watso immediately veered to his left (the correct thing to do) - but the female veered to her right - and straight into watso - and even though the speed was not high, the direct hit had watso somersaulting over his handlebars.

anyway, there is no need to go outside to get the benefits of cycling - because there are exercise bikes, which can be used indoors. the trouble with exercise bikes, is that they are outright boring - and a two minute effort is too much of an effort. watso has tried the exercise bike route, and like most others - just gave up.

when watso goes for a bike ride - even if for rtc shopping, then he has to get home again... there is none of this "giving up, it is too boring/hard" rubbish.

anyway - a google search will reveal the benefits of cycling for back problems - but also a need to be careful. it seems that when cycling, it is the back muscles which are the main drivers for the activity.

it was a long time before google or the internet, that watso worked out that cycling was the panacea for his back problem - a problem that he had from about the age of 20.

when watso was a little boy, his mother would have back problems (and it was obviously very distressing for her) - watso could not understand the problem, until he had his own back problem. one way or the other, watso's mother seemed to have overcome her back problems - and watso has no idea what solved the problem
