I'd expect a reply like that from you Sabre! Funnily enough if prices start to hyperinflate then you will see people load up surplus to need. You'll just be perplexed how your weekly shopping bill increases. Whereas countries that are net importers will just start loading up, assuming this model of globalised trade continues to survive in the face of food shortages. No different to gold only you have a physical need for food. Don't know what percentage of the world's population carries physical gold but I do know they all have to carry food.
