If one Googles methane hydrates this reveals that a Japanese company named JOGMEC pioneered successful drilling of the seabed into deposits of methane hydrate last year. Their immediate discovery was said to hold 40 trillion cubic feet of methane, equivalent to 11years of Japanese imports and it was hoped to bring the gas to market within 5 years.
It is presumably possible that there is value to be extracted in our present drill apart from oil.
