Tungsten used in new solar cells is starting to gain some traction.

I read recently of yet another type of solar cell that uses tungsten to absorb the extreme heats that they endure, by providing the core to a ceramic coated cell. The idea is to capture the heat (which accounts for over 50% of the sun's energy) as well as the light. Early signs seem very encouraging, with laboratory tests showing up to 80% efficiency of energy conversion rather than the rather poor current theoretical 34%.
