Our favourite former Queensland business woman of the year, Jenny Hutson, is taking her latest plaything to market. Mining accommodation maker Village National has lodged a prospectus with ASIC to raise $17.6 million.
This is no ordinary miner's bunkhole. ''At Village National, we refer to our mining accommodation solutions as 'residential villages', not mining camps,'' says the company website. It features a report referring to its projects as ''resort-style mining camps'' with a pool, gym and restaurants.
Village chairman Huston may be hoping to emulate the runaway success of her ABC Learning clone, G8, despite the fact her latest venture is essentially a mining services IPO against the backdrop of a resources downturn.
Maybe counter-cyclical investors like Andrew ''Twiggy'' Forrest and Nathan Tinkler would be interested.
Given the resort theme of Village National's mining accommodation, Hutson might want to borrow a few ideas from her travel industry consolidation play, S8, and fly in tourists instead. Another idea could be to hire actors to fill in as fake mining workers at the villages.
Hutson was implicated in a bizarre scheme in 2011 that involving hired actors to ensure her investment company, Wellington Capital, did not get removed as manager of the embattled Premium Income Fund.
An affidavit alleged Hutson was involved in an orchestrated attempt to subvert the outcome of a meeting of PIF investors, by signing up a rent-a-crowd of as many as 200 people to temporarily become PIF investors and vote in her favour.
Last year the corporate watchdog signalled it had no further interest in the matter.
