    deltatrader,

I'm not a ST trader but I have a put over 40 stocks into a spreadsheet and recorded their performance over 6 mths, 9 mths and a year. I need to increase the number of stocks in my study many more times but initial results for maximum return show a Stop Loss somewhere between 25% and 30%.

IMO, a stop loss is to minimise losses not to lock in profits. Though after a time it can do both. To lock in profits, I use two other criteria, minimum gain per month and price activity. The current study shows that a stock must make between 2% and 3% gain per month after a start period of 120 days and must exceed the last high after 60 days.
If either of those are not met then I sell. These are the two to lock in profits not necessarily the Stop Loss.

To me those who sell to be free carried do so for emotional reasons not business reasons.

While your SL appears to have worked this time, I would say that your SL is much too tight especially for a stock like TON. For example a 30% SL would have carried anyone that bought SIR at 5c all the way up to $5.00.
