Of interest to this debate is the overall conclusion that three technologies cost almost the same, Closed Cycle Gas Turbines (CCGT), New Nuclear and On-Shore Wind.
It is also important to take account of the need of the National Grid to balance supply with demand.
None of the above technologies are capable of being quickly brought into operation in order to meet peak demand; therefore all require what is known as Open Cycle Gas Turbines (OCGT) which is very expensive but essential.
Given here is a summary of the levelised costs for new generating plant, for 2014 and 2030. The units are £ per mega-watt-hour. For nuclear the 2014 figure is ‘old’ nuclear and the 2030 figure is ‘new nuclear’.
Gas (CCGT) £74 rising to £86; Gas (OCGT) £165 rising to £184; Nuclear £80 falling to £77; Onshore Wind £93 falling to £79; Large Scale Solar PV £122 falling to £67.
As can be seen gas generation is not the cheap option that is often presented, and is predicted to rise.

In discussing Bluegen it is important to note it can be ramped up to full out put very quickly , far faster than Gas Turbines and much more efficient.
