Ummm, IMO, nothing!
I've got an agreement with my family and friends that we don't buy each other any presents. That includes Xmas, birthdays, Mothers and Fathers Days.
The only thing I will buy is some flowers from Interflora on my parents anniversary, but that's it.
I used to send $50 gift vouchers, then the other party would send me one in return.
Seemed like a pointless exercise, and expensive, especially at Xmas.
Not many people that I know have spare money to throw around, as the cost of living in Sydney is so high.
I may seem like a tight-arse, but that's the way it is!
A phone call, and a couple of drinks together will suffice IMO.
I don't have kids though, so I can't really comment on that.
Cheers

Hi Dino,
we are the same with inlaws etc at christmas. But the pressure is on kids to give expensive presents... Trying to explain it to my daughter the cost doesnt sink in... Over a year it gets expensive...
