You are supposing that these people don't already own there own property and probably others as well as having money in shares and some in the bank earning 4% which is about what you get from rental properties and without all the problems. The idea behind buying property is to get a capital gain. At the moment most people cant see a capital gain with the prices as high as they are now so they wait for the inevitable downturn.
