Just found this article, not a bad explanation of speaker sensitivity and what it means http://www.glow-audio.com/loudspeaker.html
What I want to know is, what SPL or sound pressure level can these chips achieve. Basically how loud are they.
SPL is measured at 1 metre from the speaker, often a 1khz tone and for speaker sensitivity usually 1W RMS into the speaker.
High end Home hifi or a 5.1ch surround amp at 100W/channel might go as loud as 120dB to 130dB, a TV speaker maybe would be acceptable at possibly 105 to 110dB, a laptop maybe 95dB, mobile phone maybe 80dB at a guess. What I want to see, is with the current technology of chips they have, what is the SPL in dB at 1 metre, for 1/4 chip, 1 chip, array of 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 chips etc. I know the frequency response is good, especially in a SQUARE array, but what about in a line? If you have the laptop speakers in lines next to the screen as they have in the preso, can the speaker generate the lower frequencies as claimed by no of chips chart?
If I saw that 64 chips could produce something like 110dB at 1 metre right down to 20hz and had a projected cost of say $50 to produce 64 chips , I would buy this stock right away. But this loudness information from my brief search does not exist.
I do agree though, if Sony is actively supporting these guys now, then that is a good sign. If anyone can find/supply an SPL chart answering my question about loudness above that woudl be much appreciated.
