We tend to assume that finding a drug candidate is the difficult part of pharmaceutical science. I suspect, however, that the process of finding the 'right shape' for protein-protein interactions is simply a question of trial and error or in Phylogica's case employing its search engines.
The difficult part is finding the target. The team from IMB over a decade of work have found an exciting target in the transcription factor Sox18. There is every reason to expect that the collaboration will find a selection of phylomer candidates which can tightly bind to Sox18.
The announcement has already flagged the capability of the labs at IMB to "validate in-vivo the effects of phylomers on blood and vessel growth".
