Japan prevents the use of mobile phones in trains, restaurants and indoors.
Any Australians who have not been there have no concept of what it is like. Not only no phones, but can you imagine a ticket person walking through a Sydney train and turning to bow before departing to the next carriage.
A little personal indulgence here. When I returned to Sydney from Japan a few years ago, I got on to the Sydney monorail. The door shut with a huge bang of the kind I had not heard in Japan anywhere. Then the person opposite me started a loud phone conversation with somebody, dominating the small carriage. Bogans galore.
It was good to be home....I think.
