Investors also considered positive US economic news. Sales of new homes jumped 18 per cent in August from a month earlier to an annual rate of 504,000, marking the highest level of sales since May 2008. Economists had expected an increase of 3.4 per cent to 426,000, according to a survey by The Wall Street Journal.
Still, recent data have raised doubts about the strength of the housing market. On Monday, data showed sales of previously owned homes fell 1.8 per cent in August from July, ending four months of gains.
