I think rather than the Chinese taking on Western rare earth minerals producers, western rare earth minerals producers should take the price battle to China. The best form of defense is attack.

Few years down the line, with the advent and mass adoption of 3d printing and robotic mass manufacturing, there would be serious thoughts about China or whatever emerging markets as the low cost manufacturing base. But then it would also mean serious question on globalization and perhaps the whole modern economy.
As perhaps massive and exponential advance in technology in various sectors would make redundant, the current economic system as we know.
