It's cheap? We always camped when I was a kid 'cos Dad couldn't afford anything else.
Freedom? No hotel rules or a B&B landlady overlooking everything you do.
Getting away from it all? We go remote for a week every year. One long drop toilet, only our group at the site, $30/family/night, on the river, kids love it even the teenagers, wood fires for cooking (the boys love that).
And we go to places like Hervey Bay, camping on the beach - more crowded, but sailing/canoeing easy, not so cheap but restaurants within easy reach. More space than apartments, and no TV or internet.
Each to their own.
