& thanks Mita for helping out too.

In terms of Slogg's question - As the beneficial holder, yes, you control the stock and can sell or loan the security as you see fit.
Many holders do loan the stock to boost return too. It would seem that UBS are big holders to provide liquidity for their hedge fund clients but are also long holders in their own right as an investor - seems irrational to be both long and short, but such are the complexities of being a large global group with multiple products. If they aren't long the stock on a proprietary basis, they account for 80%+ for the shorting, which would be more than slightly strange.
Don't be too much in awe of the hedge fund business, they no more have a clue as to what is going on than the rest of us. They drive fancy cars because they rort 2 and 20% from their investors as fees!
Bear in mind that the great Warren Buffet has a 10 year $1m bet with the hedge fund industry that says index funds will outperform hedge funds over a 10 year period. After year 6, index is +44% while hedge is +13% - a lead of 30%!!! (see http://fortune.com/2014/02/05/buffett-widens-lead-in-1-million-hedge-fund-bet/)
