Bluescope Steel Limited (ASX:BSL) has confirmed that a fire that shut down its Waste Gas Cleaning Plant at the Port Kembla Steelworks has now been extinguished and recovery work has been commenced.

The fire started in an 80-metre stack on Monday night sending thick black clouds of smoke across Port Kembla. The stack partially collapsed.

The Environmental Protection Authority is assessing a plan to restart the plant, meanwhile the Steelworks continue to produce iron and steel.

The restarting of the plant is expected to cost Bluescope between $10 million and $12 million, the cause of the fire is being investigated.

Bluescope Steel reported a net loss of $40.2 million for full year to 30th June 2014.
