im not a doctor but have been working in med device industry for a while.
in answer to your question re pericardium they either suture in shut with an "interrupted" suture technique or simply leave it open. I don't think those that close it would use a patch as not sure there is a real benefit????
re patch used in vascular work, common to use a Teflon graft eg. Gore, this would have the advantage of being 'epithelized' into cell wall and not getting 'scar plate contraction'
as I said not a doctor but obvious extra applications in vascular work, maybe carotids or even AAA?????
