RIO TINTO LODGE SUBMISSION REQUESTING MINISTER REFUSE
SHOVELANNA IRON ORE PROJECT EXPLORATION APPLICATION
Cazaly Resources Ltd (ASX: CAZ) has been formally advised by the WA Department of
Industry and Resources (DoIR) that Rio Tinto Limited (Rio) has requested the Minister for State
Development, Mr Alan Carpenter MLA, exercise his discretion under section 111A of the Mining
Act of 1978 to refuse the application for the Shovelanna Iron Ore Project (ELA 46/678) on the
grounds of public interest. This submission was made in writing to the Minister on 21 September
2005, with Cazaly only being provided with a summary of this submission at this stage.
Cazaly had lodged an exploration license application for this tenement, located approximately
25 kilometres east of Mt Newman, on 7 September 2005 after the exploration license held by
previous owners, Hamersley Resources Limited (a subsidiary of Rio Tinto), Wright Prospecting
Pty Ltd and Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd, expired on 26 August 2005.
The company has been given 21 days to lodge a submission with the DoIR in support of its
application for Exploration License 46/678. Each party will then be given time to review the
submissions and make final comment on the other parties submission.
The Minister for State Development will then be given all copies of submissions and counter
submissions, together with all other relevant information, for his consideration and determination
(or direction).
Since lodging the application for this exploration license Cazaly has announced that it has
entered into an agreement with Echelon Resources Limited (Echelon) to provide technical
capabilities and to fund a A$2.5 million drilling program on the Shovelanna Iron Ore Project
(ELA 46/678). Cazaly and Echelon intend to commence an initial drilling program of up to
10,000 metres as soon as possible once the application is granted. This initial exploration
program will assist the company to build on the results from the drilling conducted by the
previous exploration license holders during the period 1984 - 2005, a total of 679 metres.
This agreement is conditional upon the grant of E46/678 to Cazaly and upon the consent of the
Minister for Industry and Resources being obtained.
A project plan is being prepared for the tenement under the technical guidance of Echelon
Managing Director Mr Matt Rimes. Mr Rimes is a mining engineer with an extensive career in
the resources sector. He has primarily worked for major mining companies including Rio Tinto
Group and North Limited focused on iron ore. Over the past 10 years he has been with Robe
River Mining (an associated entity of Rio Tinto) and held senior positions at Robe River Mining’s
operations at Pannawonica and West Angelas. Prior to joining Echelon in June 2005, Mr Rimes
held the position of Executive Manager Resource Development for Robe River Mining.
Cazaly has also announced an A$400,000 private placement with leading independent Perthbased
investment bank Argonaut Capital Limited.
The Company looks forward to working within the WA Mining Act to progress its application for
the exploration license and to quickly advancing the development of the Shovelanna Iron Ore
Project.
