I'm not a big netball fan (actually can't stand it) but I think there is some merit in sponsoring netball and other community events. In this day and age the future of an oil and gas company is in no small part linked to getting the community and government on side. Look at the problems with fracking in Victoria and NSW and to a lesser extent the south east of SA. If the community is brought on board it is helpful in the long term.

Santos sponsors the Tour Down Under cycling race in SA and is now synonymous with the event. Adelaide really is 'Australia's biggest country town' and I feel like these community sponsorships perhaps help more than they would in other states (just like sponsoring a footy club in a country town). Beach also recently committed to restoring/maintaining a historic building as part of an expansion of its headquarters in Adelaide's Eastern suburbs. This attracted local media attention as the building had been slated for demolition.
