That is why they sell locked boxes so that once you have outlayed the money to get VoIP, you will have to outlay again to buy another "generic" piece of hardware to connect to another provider.
Also while Engin provide a good service with basicly a plug and play interface, the majority of people would prefer this option to configuring a VoIP router themselves.
