In 2008 Mining companies including Rex Minerals approached the farmers to
explore for minerals on their land. Previous mining companies left the land in
a terrible state after exploration much to the ire of the farmers. Now the miners requested permission
to explore 30,000ha of land and under state law the miners had a right to do so. However they did the right
thing and asked for permission from the farmer first . The farmers saw this as an opportunity to take
advantage of the situation. Their theory was that on average only 1% of the miners would find something
reasonable so the odds were in their favour of the miners coming up empty handed. So a deal was
struck that once the drilling was completed the farmers wanted a reasonable compensation as well as the
land remediated to its original state for farming once again. That was a fair deal for both and both miners
and farmers lived in harmony.
Then the lucky 1% came up for Rex Minerals .
The attitude and harmony of the farmers took on a new profile and they banded together and took up
a challenge against the lucky Rex Minerals. Time marches on and Rex is now likened to S T Coleridge
The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner . "As idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean". Rex has shot
the albatross. That is where we are still at with Rex at the moment so its time to change Rexs profile
to "Unlucky 1%" . At current prices of 8 cents that tag must speak for itself now .
