Any ministerial reshuffle will ensure the Abbott government takes the best team into the new year and the next federal election, senior frontbencher Mathias Cormann says.
The prime minister is reshuffling his front bench after Arthur Sinodinos resigned as assistant treasurer.
Parliamentary secretary to the prime minister Josh Frydenberg is tipped to take on the role.
But there is also speculation Defence Minister David Johnston may lose his post in a broader shake-up, while Childcare Minister Sussan Ley could be elevated to cabinet.
Senator Cormann has been acting both as finance minister and assistant treasurer since Senator Sinodinos stood down in March, ahead of an appearance at the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption.
The reshuffle was entirely a matter for the prime minister, Senator Cormann said.
"Obviously, in the lead-up to the next election or over the next year it will be important to have the best possible team on the ground," he told Sky News.
"I'm sure the prime minister will make the necessary decisions to ensure we have the best possible team in 2015 and beyond."

Justis,
Tony Abbott if he's smart (and I accept that you may not think that) should put Greg Hunt, Kevin Andrews and Mathias Cormann in positions that have zero contact with the public as they possess Zero people skills and Zero media skills.
Hockey and Turnbull need to change positions as well.
Anyway, I thought Monday was forecast to be the announcement day.
