Labor, like most of the population, knows that a consumption tax is a necessary tool in any developed economy. That's why virtually all developed countries have one. That's why Labor in power never even thinks of getting rid of it.
Our version, the GST, was taken to an election and passed in the lower house. It was opposed in the senate by Labor, thus leaving the Democrats in the position to force amendments. If Labor had respected Howard's mandate it would have allowed it to pass in the senate as presented to the electorate. The Democrats amendments are what causes our current issues with the GST.

Now I get it . If the legislation isn't what you originally wanted then you can blame the Opposition. So the Libs are responsible for the MRRT and the Carbon Tax. And obviously Lab is responsible for the DAP and the Libs PPL .
