"However, the main economic tenet of the Left is government ownership and centralised control over industries."

The necessity of ownership under a socialist regime is a moot point and in reality all socialism/comunism has slightly different wrinkles when implemented, which is probably one reason we see so much squabbling between various groups of leftists over whose particular brand of socialism/communism is the most pure...

In some cases it makes sense to leave the ownership in the hands of the owners as long as the control comes from the leftist government...

In socialist countries gaining ownership is a matter of raiding the owners homes, arresting the owners and killing/imprisoning them than taking over the offices in most cases and if a leftist government is more focussed on production and efficiency it makes more sense to leave the ownership in the original or other friendly hands rather than the government as long as the objectives are aligned and production is at high level and quality...

In hitler's national socialist Germany, companies owned by jews were essentially required by law to be handed over to Germans (hittler's friendly hands) and many of the high level industrialists were backing hitler's national socialism in any case as the previous Weimar Replublic had been even worse alternative...

If these high level industrialists had ceased to support hitler, these high level industrialists would probably have found themselves to be "ex-owners" and possibly even "ex-people"...
