"...whether it be the ABC, Murdoch, Fairfax, radio or tv etc., they should report the facts and let the reader, listener or watcher make up their own minds".
That's reasonable enough, but all media do a lot more than just report the facts. I can't speak for anyone else, but much of what I enjoy are the opinion pieces by people who are specialists in their chosen area.
If all we had from any media organisation was:
"there were five traffic accidents today, including one fatality", I don't think we'd be too impressed.
Editorials set the tone of the program, and the op ed pieces plus letters to the editor, round out the 'personality' of any media organisation.
Privately owned media can come up with whatever they like. It's a free market and that market will determine the success or failure of any publication. Many have fallen away soon after starting.
The ABC, however, as a publicly funded broadcaster, has an obligation to present objective content. As others have observed, this is less and less what is happening, as their clear Left bias infiltrates even the most apparently innocuous programs.
