Shares in Australian sugar and building materials group, CSR, benefited early in 2006 from a rise in sugar prices. This did not last, with investors worried that at $US19.30 a pound, they were unsustainable. After losing ground for the next three week, CSR's share price began to recover, closing at $A4.25 on 28 March. The market was relieved by news that the company only expects sugar exports to fall by five per cent despite the damage caused by Cyclone Larry in Queensland. Although CSR does not rely on sugar for the majority of its earnings, its share price is still tied closely to the sugar price.
