The Cameroonian government wants to Kribi economic growth pole

    • Friday, 23 January 2015 10:23

While economic players are already anticipating the next start of operations in the port area of Kribi, a town in southern Cameroon, the government is already planning to make this seaside city, an economic growth pole. This division should be based on industry and tourism, to maximize the impact of the deepwater port of Kribi on economic growth and job creation. It is in this context that the Ministry of Economy has recently launched a tender for the development of Kribi development strategy.

According to sources introduced in the Ministry for the Economy, the Government's ambition is twofold. This is first able to identify the expectations of potential investors such as headlights Rio Tinto (aluminum refinery is scheduled to Kribi), GDF Suez (which should build a natural gas liquefaction plant in Kribi) or Cam Iron again (which will operate the iron Mbalam and build the pier iron deepwater port of Kribi). The next step is to evaluate the ability of Cameroonian SMEs to ensure outsourcing for multinationals in the context of the above projects.

Job creation policy is also at the heart of the government's logic. "It is about identifying job profiles that may be required in the industrial port complex of Kribi and in close cooperation with industrial promoters concerned, develop a map or conduct the census trades and skills to develop" told an official of the administration.

This plan, which is described as ambitious by some administration officials, however, poses a problem, it is that of its connection with the strategy paper for growth and employment (ECSD) that seems to have taken into account government ambitions for the city of Kribi. The conclusion of the experts who will be selected for the study is highly anticipated by both local and international partners.
