A very interesting topic indeed - I have been told in the past by a highly experienced geologist that along the coast of New Zealand lies some of these iron sands (low grade magnetite) you were referring to. Unfortunately, due to marine and enviromental regulations, companies have been restricted from making the most of it.
I shall attempt to do more research and investigate this further.
