Causing grief to whom? The status quo? Anyone who does not agree with accepted dogma is a 'grief' to an interpretation that is established or is being established.
That doesn't make them wrong on the point of the nature of the OT God.

Nor is it just the Gnostics that held that view. It is still a view that is held by anyone who reads the OT as a n impartial reader/critic. It's only if one is not impartial, if one wants to believe in the existence and goodness of the OT God that rationalization (apologetics) comes into play.

Nobody who is impartial could read the sheer vindictiveness displayed in the OT and come to the Conclusion that this Deity is indeed a 'God of Love'
