taughtbuffet I think that you are missing the whole point.

Part of the Standard model of science is the existence of a Higgs Boson which was hypothesised to be the result of the Higgs field; this field in turn was hypothesised to give matter mass.
A discovery of the Higgs Boson would indicate to scientists that they were on the right track.
If scientists showed that the Higgs Boson didn't exist that would provide equally valid information in that a rethink would be required.

No scientist ever said that the Higgs Boson was undetectable any more than they would claim that electrons are undetectable; we can't see them directly but they are detectable indirectly.

Whether or not the discovery of the Higgs Boson is a false alarm is in the scheme of things not terribly significant. What is significant is that science is work in progress especially at the leading edge of our understanding.

Remember that the science that lead to your computer, the Internet, electricity was leading edge not long ago. If scientists had not pushed the limits of their knowledge we would not be where we are today. I'm confident that people thought that their work was a waste of money at the time.

The thirst for knowledge is part of the human condition; it's a vital part of who we are.
