It's hard to know where to draw the line; we can be over protective; and we can be under protective.

When I was working on oil fields in the Middle East there was a high incidence of hand injuries, especially fingers. Some bright person found a very positive correlation between injuries and over protection as children. Those that were not allowed to play with hammers, sticks etc as children seemed to incur the most injuries.

It seemed that lessons learnt through bashing themselves as children translated into increased skills and awareness as adults to avoid injuries.
