Chevron unveils Angola plan

Chevron expects a 40% jump in its Angolan production over the next three years based on billions of dollars in investments to expand its operations.

The US oil major is already the largest oil operator in Angola, sub-Saharan Africa's second largest oil exporter after Nigeria.

"We predict a 40% rise in production up until the end of 2008," Chevron's spokesman Fernando Paiva told Reuters.

Chevron already accounts for 481,000 barrels per day out of a total of 1.3 million bpd produced in Angola - a figure the African country's government predicts will jump to 2 million bpd by 2008. Chevron operates in 600 wells and 40 platforms.

Jim Blackwell, the company's director in Angola said on Monday the expanded output would be fuelled by a three-pronged multi billion dollar expansion plan, including the $1.9 billion Sanha Condensate Plant, where output from this plant and the nearby Bomboco fields already exceeds 100,000 bpd.

A second project is the $1.4 billion Benguela/Belize deep water platform and the third is the multi-billion dollar Soyo liquefied natural gas plant to convert natural gas for export.

The Soyo LNG plant could produce 5 million tonnes of LNG per year from 2010, according to state-run news agency Angop.

Chevron will also work on the $900 million Lobito/Tomboco project, which entails the construction of three submarine centres connected to the Benguela/Belize platform for the transportation of petroleum and LNG.
