I thought that would be the case with the voting against it due to Cabinet solidarity because they have the confidence of the numbers. The vote for the spill from the backbenchers must be overwhelming. It's their jobs on the line and they want the issue aired and decided. So you will have backbenchers voting for the spill who are Abbott supporters.
The point is, Abbott must bring on a spill or face constant undermining not just from his own party, but by the Murdoch media which is relentlessly Murderous when it has a cause and is opposed.
Like Gillard, even if he wins it will be a pyrrhic victory because the media is out for blood. In Gillard's case, she had a larger margin to draw from.
Knowing he only won his position of party leader by ONE vote, he is trying to strong arm support by demanding Cabinet solidarity. This is powerful manipulation and unprecedented. Previously party leaders cared about what was thought of them and won't make such demands.
The man is unbelievable, he's a kid in the sand box a three year old in a man's body. A fascinating case study.
Politics is so compelling not just because it's about power, and policy, it's also about psychology.

dolcevita, insiders is on line here http://www.abc.net.au/insiders/
I don't by the idea that the media are out for blood, they just look for some thing to write about and while Abbott is leading, the polls in the negative and MP's are grumbling it all points to leadership speculation and something to write about
