The Nyrstar Smelter in Port Pirie in SA is currently undergoing a full re-development to the cost of around $300m. Word on the street is that the reason the re-development went ahead, is because that was the cheaper option than the environment clean up cost if the smelter was closed down.
I wonder if this same situation applies to the AL industry in Aus? What's their clean up bill due to shutting down, compared to keeping existing operations going?
