A world-first grid-connected wave energy project has been switched on at Garden Island off Perth's south.

Carnegie Wave Energy's CETO system will provide not just power, but also desalinated water to Australia's largest naval base, HMAS Stirling, which is located on the island.

The company aims to demonstrate its ability to develop a commercial-scale project.
