One of the central issues is how Allah is inconsistent with his application of salvation or mercy on the Muslim or sinner.
The Islamic justice scales themselves are extremely 'skew wiffed ' in that one good deed cancels out ten bad deeds.
That is a whole lot of bad that can be done a way with by the minimal of good.
Allah does not have a personal relationship with the Muslim in the sense Christians have with Jesus as Allah clearly states he is the Father of no one.
The only sin that is unforgivable in Islam is called shirk, that is attributing something or some other to Allah.
This is what the charge of paganism ie shirk directed at Christians, it is the unforgivable sin. Careful examination of the Koran shows that the author had no idea of Christian doctrine, but that is another point but very damaging to the inerrancy of the Koran.
The following description of a Hadith demonstrates how inconsistent the measure of grace is applied to the Muslim by Allah.
The Prophet has explained this by relating the story of a man who had killed 99 people. He then went to a scholar and asked whether Allah would accept his repentance. The scholar told that he could not see that he could ever be forgiven after having committed all those murders. The man, then, killed the scholar and completed the number of his victims to 100. He then went to another scholar and asked him whether Allah would accept his repentance. This scholar told him that there was no reason why his repentance could not be accepted. He advised him to repent immediately and not to do any more crimes. When the man complied, the scholar advised him to go to a particular town which was full of good people. He would have there a good environment which would enable him to strengthen his resolve not to disobey Allah anymore. The man was on his way to that town when Allah caused him to die. The Prophet then explains that the angel of paradise and the angel of hell disputed among themselves to which party the man belonged. The angels who are charged with administering punishment to sinners argued that the man never did a good deed, but the others argued that he repented and started acting on his repentance by traveling to this city. Allah sent to them an angel who advised them to measure the distance between the city of evildoers which the man had left and the distance to the city of good believers to which he was going. If he was nearer to the first, then he was still a sinner and should be punished. If he was nearer to the city of good believers, he should be counted among them. The Prophet then says: "When they began to make their measurements, Allah ordered the city of evil to move away and ordered the city of goodness to draw nearer. He was found to be closer to it [the city of goodness] and his soul was taken by the angels of mercy. He was forgiven."
The Islamic scholars rave about how merciful Allah can be even to cardinal sins when discussing this story, but in reality there is no coherence found in Islam which allows for such a maelstrom of violent applications of their world view.

I'm no apologist for Islam. It has become a despotic religion. But!
This story is a Hadith, a hearsay story. Somebody's retelling of a story they may have travelled through several ears and out several mouths before it was written down.
If somebody had killed 100 people, would it not be best to tell them that his repentance might be accepted to save the life of the 101st person. I thing it's a story about wisdom, not repentance.
It is also a story steeped in a brutal, ignoble culture and is therefore tailor made form a specific understanding.
The reason you struggle to understand Islam is because it was never Anglicised to the extent of Christianity. It's still a raw, Middle Eastern cultured religion. It was exactly the right religion for a despotic people.
What we see today is the effect of the religion almost gone and all the vile, animalistic nature returning and using the dead body of Islam as an excuse for all manner of atrocities.
