The action at the open is easily explained. That's people like me, i.e. non-Australian retail investors. If I want to buy Alkane in Sydney (where liquidity is better and the spread smaller) as opposed to Europe, I need to place my order (e.g. 20.000 ALk for 36 cents) a day earlier and make a smart guess where you guys will be trading (or risk to put in a "no limits" offer). The Australian partner of by broker then works through all these orders at the start of your trading day.
Part of the action towards the end could be European brokers starting their business day buying in Sydney for reselling on European markets.
In general, Friday afternoons are cheapest, unless we got news on Friday or expect (good) news on Monday.
