If you get rid of preferential voting, a run off election should be held between the two candidates with the highest primary votes. But as pointed out, this is basically what preferential voting does already without the need to vote twice.
I don't have an issue with changing preferential voting, but not to the extent that someone can win with 30% or 40% support of their electorate.
The preferential voting system means the candidate who wins has 50.1% of the support of their electorate, (even if it isn't their first choice).
