Yeah I read that article. Must say it sounds pretty grim. The big question in all of this is will the aussy grocery market go down the UK path of an all out war? The words of the woolworths boss suggest that woolies wants to avoid that - on the other hand the 'cheap cheap' and 'down down' campaigns suggest that its already happening.
A higher saturation of the market in Australia is probably warranted based on geography. I would think that the lower customer per store compared to other countries is partially caused by little towns and less customers in the geographic range. Its probably unrealistic to compare customers per store to other countries.
Metcash started implementing their turnaround program before woolies... Woolies was denying they have a problem until last week. Seriously though I've always noticed that woolies prices seem more exy than coles.
I believe (no evidence for this) that Aldi will hurt coles and woolies more than IGA.
I'm reasonably happy in MTS at the moment.
